Hotels are an opportunity to escape the everyday, to step foot into a transformative world where we can immerse ourselves in luxury and delight in the smallest details. The best hotel interiors combine this thoughtful approach to opulence with a considerate nod to context, allowing us to understand the history and nuances of a place. As mentioned before, my appreciation for well-designed things started from my youth, rooting a love and respect for beautiful things.

The keystone property is right in the center of midtown Manhattan and no stranger to locals and foreigners. The design group did another amazing work allying the hotel’s history with the Art Deco influences of the Rockefeller Center neighborhood. Stepping foot in the New York Palace’s repositioned reception area, guests leave the frenzy of mid-town Manhattan behind, and step into a place of luxury and refined calmness. For those interested in contemporary interior design projects, this is the crux of the matter. Kastl and Champalimaud are resolute in their belief that in such projects, story and history are essential.

Hearing Alexandra, Anthony, and Charlie talk about the project, their passion is palpable. Hearing them talk about it together, so is their collaborative nature. Our studio maintained the hotel's glamorous individuality through design that merges subtle references to the 1930s, 40s, and 50s with modern fixtures and finishes. Encompassing a new lobby and reception area, 45 suites, and 58 guest rooms, the renovation gives each space its own character, infusing each stay with a sense of discovery. Themes inspired by the hotel's famed gardens reinforce a connection to the outdoors, while texture, pattern, and color create continuity throughout the estate.

I love rewatching timeless classics whenever I have time, such as Casablanca and Lawrence of Arabia. The Row and Valentino are two of my favourite fashion brands — classic, simple and timeless fashion. I love visiting Community Table in Litchfield, Connecticut whenever we’re on our way home from the city.

Mid-century furniture, warm wood surfaces, and spacious travertine patios invite guests to enjoy sweeping canyon views.

Being rooted in a profound respect for nature and its seasons, Community Table offers delicious seasonal dishes that delight your senses. Also, when I’m in the Hamptons during the warmer months, I enjoy dining at the Topping Rose House. Tom Colicchio carefully prepares every dish with produce from their own farm as well as other local farms, ranches and day boat fishermen. I have a great appreciation for classical piano concertos, those performed by Lang Lang and Vladimir Ashkenazy in particular. I also really like fun, uplifting music I can dance to like Happy by Pharrell Williams, because it’s music that truly changes your spirit and mood. I just finished reading two books, the first The Hare with Amber Eye by Edmund de Waal and the second Angkor Wat (Unearthing Ancient Worlds) by Alison Behnke.

Another amazing interior design project in hospitality by the design group was the renovation of The Waldorf Astoria. Champalimaud honored the property’s elegant original craftsmanship by echoing the original Art Deco style and elevating it. The space glows as light illuminates its mosaics floors and signature plaster surfaces. Emotion is expressed through texture and colors, giving one a truly incredible aesthetic experience.

Hotel Bel-Air

The Plaza might be one of their most iconic interior design projects. Opened in 1907, The Plaza, a Fairmont Managed Hotel, overlooking Fifth Avenue and Central Park is a National Historic Landmark. True to its legacy, the design group created luxurious spaces by blending timeless furnishings with contemporary flair.

The only thing hanging is a framed thank-you note from Martin Luther King Jr. So hopefully that gives the feeling of it being an historic place, but one that’s now inhabited by a new generation that’s pretty modest about the incredible history. The luxe and legendary Southern California “Pink Palace”—where Walk of Fame royalty like Katharine Hepburn and the Beatles used to catch (or eschew) some R&R—tapped ELLE DECOR A-List designer Alexandra Champalimaud to reimagine its poolside cabanas. For all 11 of the luxe huts, Champalimaud channeled the glamour of the hotel’s storied past. Each is covered by pink candy-striped awnings and include basket-woven chairs, terrazzo side tables, and pink bistro tables sourced from local design firm Bend Goods.

We primarily work within the luxury space, and luxury today is no longer about the ‘shine’ and how expensive something looks. It is about things and spaces being well-made and embodying a sense of timelessness through their craftsmanship. As we develop each project's unique expression, Champalimaud's atelier of designers considers all the elements that define a space-history, setting, purpose and, above all, people. The Carlyle is a unique place with which the design group has had a long and fruitful relationship. The elegance and high standards of the hotel and residence were always in mind when recreating and renovating their spaces, as they were designed to accentuate its Art Deco architecture.

Champalimaud Design has also completed several major residential projects. Twelve newly built hillside suites add to the allure of the property. Mid-century furniture, warm wood surfaces, and spacious travertine patios invite guests to enjoy sweeping canyon views from beside indoor or outdoor fireplaces. A 12,000-square-foot addition accommodates a fitness studio, the Hotel Bel-Air Spa by La Prairie, and three loft-style guest suites with three-sided fireplaces and dramatic arched ceilings. The renowned oval swimming pool, a beloved element of Hotel Bel-Air for over 65 years, remains a fixture of the modernized urban getaway.

But Champalimaud, who spoke French, began looking for work as a designer. She found it, eventually starting her own small firm, an endeavor that brought her to New York in 1994 to reimagine the Drake Hotel. In the States, a promising career received an injection of rocket fuel. Nevertheless, this emphasis on comfort and modernity comes down to aesthetics once again. "In general, there's been this idea of how these hotels in the English countryside should be approached," Kastl says.

“It’s easy for a young designer to fixate on sticking to a certain concept or vision and this can mean the client’s wants are missed,” she says. “The skill of designing is the ability to incorporate and mix your vision with your clients’ to produce a project you can both be proud of.
